Reaction 04:32
REACTION After all is said and done A lot more is said than done And I want a reaction Want to provoke you Only known you for a little while Have a little faith in something real this time And I want a reaction I just want a reaction Confusion is the sharpest knife With the bluntest ultimatum But what I'm stabbing for tonite Is an act of desperation I want a reaction Reaction I want a reaction Reaction Woe, we may never know I want a reaction The desperate clutch of dead, dry air Anxious feelings and a cross to bear And I want a reaction Want to confront you Dip your big toe Or dive right in You know what you want 'til it feels like a sin And I want a reaction I just want a reaction We could lose our heads tonite Or we could suffer the passion Look into that cerebal vortex I just want a reaction Gimme reaction Reaction I just want a reaction Reaction Woe, we may never know I want a reaction After all is said and done I want a reaction Woe, we may never know And I want a reaction

Isobel 03:46
ISOBEL I'm sorry If I did you any wrong Lyin' back and drinkin' beers all night in your lawn chair Baby, I dig your ditch And I come up with my rent And I swear that we'll get along alright 'Til you wanna be my friend Isobel Hard on the head Silver shackles Under your bed Isobel Under your spell Workin' so well Your flannel shirt And your worn out patched blue jeans And you rock that red bandana like a country queen And we'll ditch the hitchhikers on our clothes And we'll watch The Grass grow wilder as the summer ends Isobel So hard on the head Silver shackles Under your bed Isobel Under your spell Working so well Long ancient days when the tide would roll out She would roll back my tape to the parts it got loud Argue all day on the bench in the park But she'd always change her tune when they day turned to dark Now Isobel took the car on down the road And she said that she'd be right back When I wanted to be her friend And it's alright If I need to be alone But the deal, for real, would've been more tight If I didn't miss her so Isobel So hard on the head Silver shackles Under your bed Isobel Under your spell Working so well

YOU LIKE IT!? LET'S DO IT?! Well, I heard those words that you gave to me How you put your hand on my shoulder Could these statements get any older? Could this joke get any bolder? And you like it Let's do it I don't need excuses to do it to ya You like it It won't bite ya And I gotta know if it's right and proper to let this feelin' grow now When I start to feel that pull on me I can feel your love vibration Dr. Wu, you and I We should be a-speakin' 'Cuz when the truth comes It starts by leakin' And you like it Let's do it I don't need excuses to do it to ya And you like it It won't bite ya And I gotta know if it's right and proper to let this feelin' grow now Let it grow now Yes, you dragged me to that cold, cold regatta And when I got there, I got a whole lotta nada Let the ragers take in the rage Let the players get their plays And you like it Let's do it I don't need excuses to do it to ya You like it It won't bite ya And I gotta know if it's right and proper to let this feelin' grow now Let it grow now Let the feelin' grow Let the feelin' grow now HUH Let the feelin' grow

Anhedonia 04:22
ANHEDONIA The night your song had died Streets were blind and I was longing I saw the sign and then I cried Is it there to remind me? Of the sadder times When I didn't know myself without you Rainy day, your dream away On every breath, you concentrate I'm feelin' anhedonia You know you can't stay Pale rider And in time You'll see it from my side One day I'll decide What is best for me? What is destiny without you? I wanna know right now Is it there to remind me? Of the prouder times No, it won't underwhelm me And when it comes to spring again I know I must begin again 'Cuz it's too late to stop now I'm feelin' anhedonia You know you can't stay Pale rider And in time You'll see it from my side One day I'll decide Epicurus Man, he sure knew how to party Late nite orgies at the garden Or then he'd start talkin' Of a future time When folks would rather live more than dyin' And I'm comin' out of my cave To join the folks, the strong and brave I'm feelin' anhedonia You know you can't stay Pale rider And in time You'll see it from my side One day I'll decide What is best for me? What is destiny without you? Woe - without you

THE WILD CHILDREN OF SANDRA Yes, she come with guns a-blazin' Twenty-four murderers in trainin' And I watched that house since '61 She just pops them out She must have her fun And I declare she was a looker when she was young You oughta face them Wild children of Sandra You oughta face them Wild children of Sandra Pick a chord and try to ride it Pick a girl and don't deny it No matter how badly she wants to bruise ya A woman's a treasure and you are the loser Take a look at the view from on back of the cruiser You oughta face them Wild children of Sandra You gotta face them Wild children of Sandra No, they're not mine They don't look like me But please don't look very hard Every time I want to keep it clean But they got a fight left to start No, they're not mine And you'll no fool me I don't know where to start Well, she wants me to hit the streets But I can't sleep in my car Now many a year has passed since the day She stopped by to say, "hey" And my sky turned red And my face went all grey Now I'm spyin' through blinds Get a view of her window Findin' escape when she creep on her tiptoe Now see me packin' my case 'Cuz that kid has my face You oughta face them Wild children of Sandra You gotta face them Wild children of Sandra No they're not mine And you don't scare me I don't care if you cut me off The way that you tease from across the street I got no cock to my walk And they're not mine They don't look like me I don't know know where to start She wants me to hit the streets But I can't sleep in my car

Johannesburg 07:32
JOHANNESBURG I walk through suburban tunnels With graffiti on the walls By the local white bread kids And the lines of the swastika Form a pattern that has spread To those who have it all And we're living in a country where democracy's symbolic A disguise to mask the hate A country where the speech is free And goes without a cost Unless it gets to an offended face And when it comes down To push and shove I feel so powerless Whenever I begin to feel this way I'm in Johannesburg 100,000 soldiers are marching off a cloud Pounding at the gates No angels at our shoulder Standing by or watching over The military states And all I see is colour There is no black and white There is no truth for me You can have my coat now, honey If you can't wait Gonna burn Johannesburg And the bombs keep getting bigger To accommodate the target 'Til there is no hiding place There is no use in talkin' When words get in the way And hate is always safe Oh, when it comes down to fair and square There is no remedy And all that I have left is time to waste 'Til we burn Johannesburg There are strangers in the world Victims of the darkness The folks we never see No place that you can see them And no politician cares Or even knows they're there But when it comes time To shine the light It is all so clear to me Why must we pretend when we stare it in the face?

FORGET ALL ABOUT IT AWHILE I have a friend She doesn't want me to give her name out She staples egg cartons all over the walls To keep the sounds in And she don't give her heart to anything analog Well, watch out honey 'Cuz I'm movin' in And I'll think that I'll stay for awhile Think I'll stay Forget all about it awhile She says My love, yer gonna give yourself an ulcer Well, you wouldn't trade it in for a shirt and a tie But I could trade you And I sure would like to stay a little longer Watch out honey 'Cuz I'm movin' in And I'll think that I'll stay for awhile Think I'll stay And forget all about it awhile And you get tired and you get weary You get tired of all them theories That you hear when you start listening to your mother And I really like your talkin' Yes, I dig what you say But I lose when I lose you at the end of the summer Watch out honey 'Cuz I'm movin' in And I'll think that I'll stay for awhile Yes I think WOE, that I'll stay And forget all about it awhile

Your Girl 03:42
YOUR GIRL Gettin' freaky at the cafe That sweet Friday night My prospects were growin' I was feelin' alright And she wore that red dress She was lookin' so fine But ya know, that doesn't matter to me My lovin' is blind Wish I could find a better way Toward happiness But I like your girl the best I like your girl the best So the band, we took our last break Before our last set I sat down beside her Did not know what to do next She was lookin' so sadly Didn't know what I played wrong Thought if I could sing this song to her I could write all her wrongs Wish I could find a better way Toward happiness But I like your girl the best Like your girl the best I like your girl the best Like you girl the best I like your girl the best I like your girl the best I like your girl the best So we kept pretty quiet Then it was time for a song Before I could turn around I knew they were gone

Emma 04:18
EMMA Wasn't so much the way you said things But the silence means a lot Time the space between your kisses They ain't healin' anyone And you know you can find me here Doncha know I'd slip down your stream Wash my hands, taste the water And all the finer things Wish that I could give the world to you But it's too small for all your plans Watch the stars, they fall in line for you You made the angels start a band And you gotta take your time Before I take your time You gotta do what you can do With your life I'll buy a truck and we can take the sun On down the 'mouth, from Sydney to Saint John Watch the trees as autumn comes along You don't lose heart in the lost and found 'Cuz you ain't nothin' but yours tonite Emma Emma And you gotta take your time Before I take your time You gotta do what you can do With your life

PICTOU COUNTY Well, I thought I'd be wise To go west for the money So I wouldn't have to sell my body So I loaded up the K car With a trunk of Sam's Pizza And my best winter radial tires Wishin' I was back in Pictou County What doesn't kill me will just make me sadder Well, I thought I'd be wise To try the big city Where everyone is sellin' me hydro Now here I am Losing my humour 'Cuz I don't have The Comedy Channel Wishin' I was back in Pictou County What doesn't kill me will just make me sadder Well, I thought I'd be wise to go west for the quiet Join the gophers in the endless prairies I got so much Regina And so much Beaver River I was too tired to do poor Prince Albert Woe no Wishin' I was back in Pictou County What doesn't kill me will just make me sadder Go right ahead, Evan Well, I thought I'd be wise To go raw like Quebecois With my gitter and my pocket rocker But on Montreal's streets They want smoked meat Kicked my ass Saul Bellow To Chicago Wishin' I was back in Pictou County What doesn't kill me will just make me sadder Well, I thought I'd be wise To go home for my sanity 'Cuz I wasn't doin' myself any favours But when it got dark The car wouldn't start And I ended up on Baffin Island Wishin' I was back in Pictou County What doesn't kill me will just make me sadder Woehoe What doesn't kill me will just made me sadder

LOBSTERS AND PENGUINS (LOBSTERS) Beside the garden walls, we crawl In ancient peace We don't need your money In the Gulf of Maine But closer to Yarmouth Crustaceans untarnished Comin' out of my shell And I'm gnawing it down For precious nutrients Dance face to face Pinch of flesh for the taste I ate you You're tasty And the lobsters get high And the lobsters get high Ride on the tail of a whale and smile Smile Trawlers, traps, and elastic bands do not exist Tonite I dine on clams and fish In the murky bottoms Trawlers, traps, and elastic bands do not exist Tonite I dine on clams and fish In the murky bottoms When I was a kid, I hid Checked out the honeys He checked out the honeys I see none of the tail That I seen today And that ain't even funny Might get swept by a wave I back pedal for days And seaweed Just happens Now don't cross my path 'Cuz you might regret this When you ain't got no claws left And the lobsters get high And the lobsters get high Ride on the tail of a whale and smile Smile Trawlers, traps, and elastic bands do not exist I dine on clams and fish In the murky bottoms Trawlers, traps, and elastic bands do not exist I dine on clams and fish In the murky bottoms Aah (PENGUINS) All the boys and I, we huddle With our eggs Try and keep our leggies warm And while the chicks go get our feed We try to brave the storm And I never want to know dumb luck I never want to know dumb luck Further off, we're staring At the break Where the water divides the ice And a little filet-o-fish It would be awfully nice And I never want to know dumb luck I never want to know dumb luck

SINKING SHIPS The wine had lost its taste The water was in my mouth Feelin' like we're helpless The way we wander now Did you hear that last explosion? It's not that far away See the prisoners chained on the bay And it's just the way that you're feelin' them Beat them with their own punch And the crew is shouting louder Getting darker with the rum You say it's not that bad But I've been watching this ship for days And what rafts these lives had made The wine had lost its taste Lady, your kiss, without Deceive me, like yer sweepin' And tossin' me about No way to lose the learnin' It's the hard way, I found out And the singers sing so loud And if you miss me in the morning Flyin' in your big jet plane Don't say I didn't warn ya Can't say I feel the same Need no news to know ya When the words they say are rhymes And I don't believe in signs The wine had lost its taste The moment I found out That our shaky ship was sinking And no place to anchor now A shot will send me runnin' How revenge must seem so sweet But now the bell tolls for thee And if you miss me in the morning Look down at our sinking ships When I see you send the warning It's like the stone can't skip There is no way around it When a ripple becomes a wave A new one starts its break

JEFF GAY AND SPECIAL BLENDS
KRIS MOULTON - drums
EVAN CARDWELL - guitars, mandolin, backing vocals
JEFF GAY - more guitars and everything else

REISSUE NOTES: This album is both the first official JEFF GAY and first TOSSING RECORDS release on CD. There were no outtakes from this album except for an uncompleted fast take of Pictou County, which is pretty dreadful tbh. A studio version of Your Girl was recorded with TERRY PULLIAM at Soundmarket on Quinpool; it is scheduled to appear on TSR006, Dig the Modern, which collects demos recorded after 1997's As of Now and before Kindly Requests. Several songs that appear on Kindly Requests were demo'd by Jeff Gay as well, nearly always in one man band format, and these will also appear on TSR006.
